1 Star Critical Review by Tim Kellis
Relationship Rescue
by Phillip C. McGraw, PhD.
Introduction:
A book that clearly demonstrates the lack of understanding of the successful relationship is Relationship Rescue by Phillip C. McGraw, Ph.D. What is so sad about this book is that he is so close to the answer yet still unable to understand. Today he is the highest profile psychologist in the industry but that doesn’t mean he comes close to really helping troubled relationships.
Because of his profile, though, he is the most colorful in his words and his writing. Unfortunately for his audience, he is even more emphatic about his beliefs, which turn out to be even more illogical than many of his competitors. This fact is most obvious in his section defining the myths of the relationship. Yes, even the esteemed Dr. Phil falls into this trap with his relationship book. In the book Dr. Phil first assumes that yes every relationship includes arguments.
Details:
For example, he explains that it is “completely na?ve and fanciful thinking” to believe serious disagreements can be resolved and that “In the twenty five years that I have been doing work in the field of human behavior, I have seen few if any genuine relationship conflicts ever get resolved.” Yes, it appears he is admitting that he has not solved one conflict in twenty-five years of practice!
So is he saying we just move on without any possibility of reconciling differences in relationships? His “logic” is that “If arguing is done in accordance with some very simple rules of engagement, it can actually help the quality and longevity of the relationship in a number of ways.” He cites numerous times throughout the book this belief. “…Whether you have arguments is not what determines the long-term success or failure of your relationship. It’s how you argue.”
In most of the rest of the book he elaborates on these very simple rules of how to argue as his new revelations. Without a platform of common sense, the logic of arguments is followed by suppression of the negative feelings behind the discontent, without any psychological explanation for the source of these negative feelings.
He also mentions, “Men are going to be men and women are going to be women, and no therapist can change it.” Dr. Phil actually reveals that therapy is not directed towards men by stating in a letter written to men at the back of the book, “I’m assuming that this letter is the first thing you’re reading in this book.”
On the positive side, this book begins his quest to help individuals become happy by explaining the path to overcome the troubles is the responsibility of the reader. Individuals must be happy with themselves before they can make the relationship happy.
In a section where he comes oh so close to discovering the positive relationship is a section entitled “Make yourself happy rather than right”. Ironically, in this section he cites one of the few case studies of a chief master sergeant father and a rebellious son in exhibiting the differences between being right and happy. Again, this is one of the few case studies cited.
The father comments his son should obey him “because I’m the father, by God, and as long as he’s living under my roof, eating my food, and spending my money, I’ve got the right to tell him what to do and how to do it.” Does Dr. Phil follow up with successfully helping the father’s perspective? No. Two and a half weeks after this session the son dies playing basketball. Now of all of the examples he must have seen in his “twenty five” years in practice this is the only example he could come up with? Why wouldn’t he give an example of an unhappy man and wife with whom he was able to convey this message?
Dr. Phil has given up on relationship therapy as he mentioned on Oprah, though, because he realizes there isn’t anything he can do. He does try sometimes now that he has his own show. David Letterman even ribs Dr. Phil nightly on his show: Words of Wisdom From Dr. Phil, “I don’t know what I am doing,” “I’ll beat the crap out of you.” “Call your wife a bitch.” “90% of people are stupid.” Apparently Dr. Phil has now become an entertainer instead of a psychologist, sort of a Jerry Springer with a diploma.

5 Stars Dr.Phil Books and CD’s
I have and read every book Dr. Phil has written and 2 of the CD Book’s. There isn’t any information that he proects that isn’t helpful. This man is down to earth and I watch or tape his show every day. I have improved my own life from listening, reading, and watching him. I can’t even imagine him being behind a desk and seeing clients on an hourly basis on his couch sort-of-speak. He is doing what he is suppose to be doing and God Bless him for including his family. He is Mr. Wonderful. It would be my dream to meet him some day.
5 Stars The Relationship Rescue Workbook
This book offered very helpful exercises for my wife and I to open up conversation. In order to benefit from the workbook, it is a must to be honest with each other!
4 Stars The Relationship Rescue Workbook
This is a great asset to people that want an in depth look at their relationship.
5 Stars Excellent thought provoking book!
As always, Dr. Phil has insight that makes perfect sense but the rest of us just don’t get quite so easily! He tells you like it is and expects you to do nothing more than be honest with yourself. He has excellent exercises to do that require some soul searching at times, and his advice is thought provoking and effective! I highly recommend this book if you are having relationship issues, and neither of you wants to end it, but neither of you knows how to fix it either. It really helps if you both do it together but one person could get a lot of advice and direction to go too. Also recommend you get the workbook that goes with this book…makes it much easier than a bunch of notebooks everywhere with the exercises he has you do throughout.
I don’t think you will regret this purchase. Dr. Phil ROCKS!

5 Stars Awesome work-out DVD
Kathy Smith is the best. I have almost all of her work-out DVD’s. This one is perfect if you don’t have a lot of time to work-out. Twenty minute work-outs!
4 Stars Didn’t love it at first
At first i hated this DVD because Kathy Smith makes you work HARD. Over time as I became more familiar with the routine i really started to like it.
You get two DVDs with workouts for both the upper and lower body and there’s a hard version and a standard version of every move so you can tailor the workout to your skill level. You also need a few sets of dumbells and plenty of space to get the most out of the workouts.
With this DVD I’m getting good tone in my arms and legs and I really enjoy doing the workout.
5 Stars Great workout!
Excellent cueing, very easy to follow. This is a challenging and highly effective workout. It’s one of my favorites.
5 Stars Quick & Effective
I’m an internist, and I have recommended this video to many women in my practice. I have used both volume 1 and 2 for years. I like volume 1 more since the routines, though easy, have been effective in my experience. I recommend this video along with cardio daily. The routine that seems to work well for me and some of my patients is to combine the upper body workout (20 minutes) 3 days a week, alternating with lower body workout (20 minutes) 3 days a week with 30+ minutes of cardio 5 - 6 days a week as well as the abdominal exercises daily. I typically will watch my favorite shows or news program and do interval training by walking during the program and running/jogging during the commercials. In my experience, women’s metabolism changes with hormonal change and we need to maintain the lean body mass for the tone and metabolism. One last thing, the video might look simple but ease into it so that you can see results without injury. Always have your physician clear you for exercises if you have medical problems or orthopedic issues to minimize injuries. Stay with it, and you should see results. Good luck!
5 Stars JUST GREAT!
It’s a really good exercise program! Worked all the major parts of the body that we struggle with. It really challenged me. And there were a lot of good tips like good posture and good eating habits as well.

Prioritization Delegation and Assignment Practice Exercises for Medical Surgical Nursing

This must-have workbook helps students learn the prioritization and delegation skills needed to survive nursing school, pass the NCLEX-RN? examination, and make the transition to practice in today’s healthcare environment. Consisting of three parts plus an answer key, this resource provides numerous opportunities for students to review cases and answer questions similar to those they will see on the NCLEX-RN examination - including questions in alternate-item formats . Part 1, written by delegation expert Ruth Hansten, is an introduction that provides a practical review of clinical delegation skills and serves as a framework for the exercises that follow. Part 2 consists cases of patients who have relatively straightforward health problems followed by NCLEX examination-style questions focusing on prioritization, delegation, and assignment. Part 3 consists of complex, unfolding cases involving patients who have multiple health conditions, as well as complex patient assignments.

5 Stars Good Book
The book is detailed and thorough. Not too dry. Good exercises for practice. Easy to read and understand.
4 Stars Prioritization, Delegation, and Assignment: Practice Exercises for Medical-Surgical Nursing (Purchased on 12/29/2008)
Very nice book. A software could be better especially in grading and rationale like others such as evolve have done.
3 Stars Helpful for NCLEX
I am currently using this book to study for my NCLEX. The book is just questions, which after taking Kaplan, I presume are similar to the NCLEX.
Throughout the book I am noticing many errors (When I say MANY I mean 10+ in the first 4 chapters). The errors range from wrong words *hypo/hyper* *increased/decreased* and you are left to fend for yourself trying to not only answer the question, but figure out how it is bass-ackwards. Other errors include spelling errors, and mismatched question/answer key.
If you get the book you will see the errors, but for the most part, it has been helpful. Some questions are VERY easy and others make you think which is helpful. All in all I would recomend the book, but again- it’s a bit more of a hassel than I expected from an Elsevier publication.
5 Stars Excellent NCLEX Reference Book
I strongly recommend this book to any nursing student getting ready to take the NCLEX.
4 Stars Prioritization Delegation & Assignment..
First I must say that I have not taken the NCLEX yet-so I can not say whether this book was beneficial in that. I have already gone through it and was suprised at how huch I did not know about the best answer when it came to the area of LPN’s. This book is worth buying because it’s not expensive and can be gone through in a few hours. I felt I got my money’s worth.
